How a Spanish mobile number is built
Spain abolished its domestic trunk 0 prefix back in 1998 - every Spanish
phone number, mobile or landline, is now a flat 9-digit National
Significant Number with no leading zero to add or drop, ever. Mobile
numbers all start with 6 or 7; the CNMC (Spainโs telecoms regulator)
opened the 7 series once the original 6 block began running low. A
dummy number here, such as +34 655500000, keeps that same 9-digit,
no-leading-zero shape.
Spain phone number format and example (+34)
- Example (fake):
+34 655 50 00 00 - International and domestic are the same:
+34 [6-7]XX XXX XXXor[6-7]XX XXX XXX- no digit is added or dropped either way. - Landlines follow the identical rule - a Madrid number always starts
91and a Barcelona number93, with no separate trunk code to strip when calling from abroad.
Mobile number portability has applied in Spain since 2000, so a 6 or 7
number tells you nothing about carrier - Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, and
their MVNOs all share the same national ranges.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
Spain has no officially reserved block for fictional or testing phone
numbers, unlike the North American 555 convention this site borrows the
idea from. The 555 here is our own marker to make the output read as
obviously non-real, not a CNMC-recognised range.
FAQ
Why donโt Spanish numbers ever have a leading 0, unlike most of Europe? Spain restructured its numbering plan in 1998 and folded the old area code into the subscriber number itself, producing one flat 9-digit number nationwide. Itโs simpler than the German or UK approach, but it means every Spanish number, mobile or landline, looks identical in structure.
Will a generated number verify on a Spanish app like Bizum?
It will pass basic format checks (right length, valid 6/7 prefix),
since thatโs all most forms validate up front. It cannot receive the actual
SMS a verification step sends, because thereโs no SIM behind it.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in Spain, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
