How a South African mobile number is built
South African mobile numbers are 9 digits after the +27 country code,
under the Independent Communications Authority of South Africaโs (ICASA)
numbering plan. The traditional big-four networks sit mostly in the 06-
08 range - Vodacomโs classic block is 082, MTNโs is 083, Cell Cโs is
084, and Telkom Mobileโs is 081 - while 060-069 was opened more
recently for number portability and MVNO growth as the older blocks filled
up. A dummy number here, such as +27 655500000, keeps the required
[6-8]XX shape without matching any specific networkโs real block.
South Africa phone number format and example (+27)
- Example (fake):
+27 65 550 0000 - International:
+27 [6-8]XX XXX XXXX. - Domestic:
0[6-8]XX XXX XXXX- the leading0is a national trunk prefix, dropped when dialing from abroad. - Landlines use separate geographic area codes (
011Johannesburg,021Cape Town, and so on) - this generator produces mobile numbers only.
Mobile number portability has applied in South Africa since 2006, so a
082 or 083 prefix tells you which network first issued a number, not
necessarily which one itโs on today.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
South Africa has no officially reserved block for fictional or testing
phone numbers, unlike the North American 555 convention this site
borrows the idea from. The 555 here is our own marker to make the output
read as obviously non-real, not an ICASA-recognised range.
FAQ
Will a generated number verify on a South African app that uses a bankโs OTP or FICA check? No. Those flows send a code to a real SIM to confirm identity or a transaction, and a dummy number has no SIM behind it, so nothing is ever delivered. Use these numbers to fill and test the form, not to clear a live verification step.
Do the first three digits tell you the network?
For a real number, they used to reliably - 082 Vodacom, 083 MTN, 084
Cell C, 081 Telkom Mobile - though portability and the newer 06X MVNO
range have loosened that link. For a generated number, no - the 555
marker doesnโt correspond to any assigned block.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in South Africa, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
