How a Nigerian mobile number is built
Nigerian mobile numbers are 10 digits after the +234 country code.
Written domestically they carry a national trunk 0, giving the familiar
11-character forms like 0803โฆ: the 0, a 3-digit network code, and a
7-digit subscriber number. The Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC) assigns those 4-digit network codes by carrier: MTN holds
0803/0806/0810/0813/0814/0816/0903/0906 and more, Globacom
holds 0805/0807/0811/0815/0905, Airtel holds
0802/0808/0812/0901/0902/0904/0907, and 9mobile holds
0809/0817/0818/0908/0909. A dummy number here, such as
+234 7555000000, keeps the right [7-9]XX shape without landing on any
of those actual assigned codes.
Nigeria phone number format and example (+234)
- Example (fake):
+234 755 500 0000 - International:
+234 [7-9]XX XXX XXXX. - Domestic:
0[7-9]XX XXX XXXX- the leading0is a national trunk prefix, dropped when dialing from abroad. - Landlines use separate geographic area codes (
01Lagos,09Abuja, and so on) - this generator produces mobile numbers only.
Mobile number portability has applied in Nigeria since 2013, so a 0803 or
0805 prefix tells you which network first issued a number, not
necessarily which one itโs on today.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
Nigeria has no officially reserved block for fictional or testing phone
numbers, unlike the North American 555 convention this site borrows the
idea from. The 555 here is our own marker to make the output read as
obviously non-real, not an NCC-recognised range.
FAQ
Will a generated number verify on a Nigerian app like Paystack, Flutterwave-powered checkouts, or a bankโs USSD sign-up? No. Those flows send an OTP to a real SIM, and a dummy number has no SIM behind it, so nothing is ever delivered. Use these numbers to fill and test the form, not to clear a live verification step.
Do the digits after the country code tell you the network?
For a real number, yes - the full 4-digit code (0803, 0805, 0802,
0809, and so on) identifies the original carrier. For a generated number,
no - the 555 marker doesnโt map to any of NCCโs assigned codes.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in Nigeria, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
