How an Australian mobile number is built
Australian mobiles are the one number type in the Australian Numbering Plan
that isnโt geographic - every mobile number belongs to a single national
04 series, regardless of which state or territory the SIM was issued in.
Written domestically thatโs 04XX XXX XXX (10 digits including the leading
0); drop the 0 and add +61 for the international form, giving 9 digits
after the country code - exactly the shape of +61 455500000 from this
generator. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) manages
the whole plan under the Telecommunications Numbering Plan.
Australia phone number format and example (+61)
- Example (fake):
+61 455 500 000 - International:
+61 4XX XXX XXX. - Domestic:
04XX XXX XXX- the leading0is a national access code, not part of the number. - Landlines use geographic area codes (
02NSW/ACT,03VIC/TAS,07QLD,08WA/SA/NT) - this generator only produces the non-geographic mobile format.
Mobile number portability has been available in Australia since 2001, so a
04XX prefix tells you nothing about the carrier - Telstra, Optus, TPG, and
their resellers all issue numbers from the same shared range.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
Australia does have official fiction numbers, but they arenโt 555: ACMA
publishes a fixed list of 30 mobile numbers (all starting 0491 57, such as
0491 570 156) plus 5550 xxxx and 7010 xxxx landline blocks, set aside
for TV, film, and other creative works. Only the listed mobiles are reserved -
other 0491 57 numbers can be real. This siteโs 555 convention is borrowed
from the North American fake-number tradition rather than those Australian
numbers - output here is phone-shaped and safe for forms and fixtures, but if
you need a number guaranteed never to reach anyone, use one from
ACMAโs list.
FAQ
Will a generated number verify on an Australian app like MyGov or a bankโs sign-up form?
It will pass basic format checks (right length, valid 04 prefix), since
thatโs all most forms validate up front. It cannot receive the SMS code
those services actually send, because thereโs no SIM behind it.
Are these the same as ACMAโs official drama numbers?
No - ACMAโs 30 listed 0491 57 mobile numbers are the government-guaranteed
safe numbers for broadcast and film use. Numbers from this generator are dummy
data for software testing, not a substitute for that official list.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in Australia, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
