How a Mexican mobile number is built
A Mexican number is a 2- or 3-digit area code (LADA) followed by a
7- or 8-digit subscriber number, 10 digits total after +52 - 55 for
Mexico City, 33 for Guadalajara, 81 for Monterrey, and so on. Since
August 2019, Mexicoโs telecom regulator (IFT) simplified dialing so mobile
and landline numbers share this same flat 10-digit shape nationally; before
that, calling a cell phone meant inserting an extra trunk digit (044 or
045) that no longer exists. A dummy number here, such as
+52 5555500000, keeps that current LADA + subscriber shape.
Mexico phone number format and example (+52)
- Example (fake):
+52 55 5550 0000 - International:
+52 XX XXXX XXXX(LADA length varies: 2 digits for major cities, 3 for smaller ones). - Domestic: dialed as the same 10 digits directly, no trunk prefix needed since the 2019 simplification.
- Mexico no longer distinguishes mobile from landline in the dialing format itself - both use LADA + subscriber number.
Mobile number portability has applied in Mexico since 2008, so a 55 LADA
tells you the number was first issued in Mexico City, not which of Telcel,
AT&T Mexico, or Movistar currently serves it.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
Mexico has no officially reserved block for fictional or testing phone
numbers, unlike the North American 555 convention this site borrows the
idea from (despite sharing a continent with the US and Canada, Mexico isnโt
part of the NANP). The 555 here is our own marker to make the output read
as obviously non-real, not an IFT-recognised range.
FAQ
Will a generated number verify on a Mexican app that uses WhatsApp or a bankโs SMS code? No. Those flows send a code to a real SIM, and a dummy number has no SIM behind it, so nothing is ever delivered. Use these numbers to fill and test the form, not to clear a live verification step.
Why did Mexican phone numbers get simpler in 2019?
IFT dropped the old requirement to dial an extra 1 or trunk code before a
mobile number, unifying mobile and landline dialing into one flat national
format. Any guide referencing the old 11-12 digit dialing pattern is
outdated.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in Mexico, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
