How a Korean mobile number is built
Every South Korean mobile number starts with 010. Written domestically it
is 11 digits - 010-XXXX-XXXX - and internationally the leading 0 is dropped,
giving +82 10 XXXX XXXX (10 digits after the country code). That single
prefix is the result of a 2004 unification by the Ministry of Science and ICT:
the old carrier-specific prefixes 011, 016, 017, 018, and 019 were
retired and every new mobile line moved onto 010.
A dummy number from this page, such as +82 1055500000, keeps that exact
shape - +82, then 10, then eight digits - so it passes the phone-number
validation most Korean signup forms use, while the 555 block keeps it away
from real subscribers.
South Korea phone number format and example (+82)
- Example (fake):
+82 10 5550 0000 - Domestic:
010-1234-5678- the hyphenated 3-4-4 grouping is how Koreans write and read mobile numbers. - International:
+82 10-1234-5678- drop the leading0of010. - Landlines use area codes instead (
02Seoul,031Gyeonggi,051Busan) - this generator produces mobile numbers only.
Because every carrier shares 010, the number itself no longer tells you
whether it is on SK Telecom, KT, or LG U+. Number portability makes that doubly
true: a 010 number can move between all three.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
South Korea has no officially reserved range for fictional or example phone
numbers, unlike North Americaโs 555-0100-555-0199. The 555 after 010
here is our own marker to keep generated numbers obviously non-real and clear
of typical subscriber blocks - it is not an official Korean fictional range.
FAQ
What does a valid Korean phone number look like?
010-XXXX-XXXX domestically, or +82 10-XXXX-XXXX internationally - 11
digits with the 0, 10 without it. If a form rejects a Korean number, it
usually expects one of those two forms, not a mix like +82 010.
Will a generated number work for Kakao, Naver, or a PASS identity check? No. Korean sign-ups usually verify a real SIM through an SMS code or a carrier identity check (PASS), and a dummy number has no SIM or carrier record behind it. Use these numbers to test the form and your validation, not to clear a live verification.
Why donโt Korean mobile numbers start with 011 or 016 anymore?
They were phased out after 2004 when all carriers moved to the shared 010
prefix. A few legacy numbers lingered for years, but new numbers are all 010,
so test data should be too.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in South Korea, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
