How a German mobile number is built
Germanyโs Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) allocates mobile
numbers in operator-specific blocks under the 015X, 016X, and 017X
prefixes - 0151/0160/0170/0171/0175 to Telekom, 0162/0172/
0173/0174 to Vodafone, 0176/0179 to O2 Telefรณnica, and more besides.
Unlike most countries, the total length of a real German mobile number
varies by block - some run 10 digits, others 11 - because Bundesnetzagentur
assigns subscriber-number blocks of different sizes to different operators.
This generator always produces the 11-digit shape (+49 15555000000), which
keeps the siteโs format consistent even though it doesnโt mirror every
real-world block length exactly.
Germany phone number format and example (+49)
- Example (fake):
+49 15555 000000 - International:
+49 1XX XXXXXXXX(length varies by block, as above). - Domestic:
01XX XXXXXXXX- the leading0is a national access code, dropped when dialing from abroad. - Landlines use geographic area codes assigned by city (
030Berlin,089Munich, and so on) - this generator produces mobile numbers only.
Mobile number portability has applied in Germany since 2002, so a 0151 or
0171 number today may sit on a completely different network than the one
that originally issued it.
A note on the โ555โ in these numbers
Germany has no officially reserved block for fictional or testing phone
numbers, unlike the North American 555 convention this site borrows the
idea from. The 555 here is our own marker to make the output read as
obviously non-real, not a Bundesnetzagentur-recognised range.
FAQ
Will a generated number verify with a German bank or PostIdent-style check? No. Those flows send a code to a real SIM or check a real identity document, and a dummy number has no SIM behind it, so nothing is ever delivered. Use these numbers to fill and test the form, not to clear a live verification step.
Why do real German mobile numbers have different lengths?
Bundesnetzagentur handed out subscriber blocks of varying sizes to different
operators over time, so a 0151 Telekom number and a 0176 O2 number can
have a different number of digits after the prefix. This generator keeps a
single fixed length for simplicity.
What you can use them for
- Filling phone fields while testing signup, checkout, or profile forms
- Seed data for a database or a demo environment
- Screenshots, tutorials, and UI mockups that need a realistic number
- Example numbers in documentation
What they are not
These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in Germany, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.
Is it legal to use a fake phone number?
Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.
