How a Kenyan mobile number is built

Every Kenyan mobile number is 9 digits after the +254 country code. Domestically it carries a trunk 0: 0712 345 678 becomes +254 712 345 678 from abroad. Mobiles long started with 7; when the 07 range began running out, the Communications Authority of Kenya opened a new 01 range, so newer numbers look like 0110 123 456.

Operator prefixes at a glance

The first digits show which operator originally issued a number:

Mobile number portability has been in place since 2011, so a real numberโ€™s prefix shows its original operator, not necessarily the current one. This generator picks from both the 07 and 01 ranges.

A note on the โ€œ555โ€ in these numbers

Kenya has no official block of fictional phone numbers. The 555 after the prefix is this siteโ€™s own marker to make generated numbers read as test data. They have a valid Kenyan shape, so they pass format checks, but they are not guaranteed to be unassigned.

FAQ

Will a generated number work for M-Pesa? No. M-Pesa, like any mobile-money or banking service, needs a real SIM to receive codes. A dummy number has no SIM behind it. Use generated numbers to fill and test the form, not to pass a real verification step.

Why do some Kenyan numbers start with 01? The 07 range filled up, so the Communications Authority opened 01 for new lines. Both are standard mobile numbers of the same length.

Do the first digits tell you the operator? For a real number they show the original operator - 072 Safaricom, 073 Airtel, 077 Telkom - but portability means it may have moved. For a generated number they mean nothing: it isnโ€™t assigned to anyone.

What you can use them for

What they are not

These numbers cannot receive SMS or OTP codes. They are not temporary, virtual, or disposable inbox numbers. If you need to actually receive a verification code in Kenya, you need a real SIM or a paid virtual number service - this is the wrong tool for that.

Is it legal to use a fake phone number?

Yes, for testing, demos, documentation, and mockups. Using any number - fake or real - to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or get around a verification step you're required to complete is not.

These numbers are randomly generated dummy data. They are not real, cannot receive SMS or OTP codes, and are not temporary or disposable inbox numbers. Use them for testing, examples, documentation, UI mockups, and seed data only.
